Santa Monica is a beachfront city in Los Angeles County. It sits just north of Venice Beach, at the terminus of the 10 freeway. You would be hard pressed to find a livelier center for shopping, eating, strolling, beach-going, or night life in the Los Angeles area. It is a destination for tourists and locals alike. Its pier and its notoriously bustling 3rd Street Promenade are great areas in which to spend either the day or the evening. Santa Monica’s real estate is meticulously regulated; space is at a premium, and the city zones very specifically to allow for public parking structures, pedestrian accessibility, etc. Housing options range from affluent single-family homes in the hills to apartment buildings—also usually affluent—in the flats. The healthcare and entertainment industries are prominent facets of Santa Monica’s economy, but of course its myriad restaurants and stores provide a significant number of jobs as well. Many, many people commute in and out of Santa Monica daily. Be advised that traffic moving east is dreadfully bad during rush hour. If you want to live somewhere with high walkability and/or bikeability, Santa Monica could be perfect for you, as most normal tasks can be accomplished via non-vehicular means of transportation. Main arteries: the 10 freeway, the Pacific Coast Highway, Wilshire Blvd., Santa Monica Blvd.
