Compton is a populous city in the western Southeast region of Los Angeles County. It borders Lynwood, Paramount, Willowbrook, Carson, and of course, the tiny sub-cities of West Compton and East Compton. Compton is quite old among cities in Los Angeles County, having been incorporated way back in the late 1800's. Today, Compton is known for its centrality and relative accessibility within Los Angeles—it is circumscribed by the 105, 710, 91, and 110 freeways—and for the rap and hip hop music artists it has produced and inspired over the last several decades. One noteworthy area within Compton is its Civic Center, which includes some of the city's nicest buildings: the courthouse, the public library, city hall, and the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial. Compton is reasonably accessible via public transportation owing largely to its Metro Blue Line light rail station, which connects to the rest of the LA train system. Apart from the aforementioned freeways, other major local throughways in the area include East Rosecrans Ave. and South Alameda Street.
